Ebonyi Police Cite Mental Instability in Inspector’s Wife Abduction Allegation
Ebonyi State Police Command has addressed the child-theft controversy involving Mrs. Chioma Nwewu, wife of an inspector in Amachi Amagu community. The incident on March 20 began when locals found her wandering without explanation and accused her of attempting to abduct a child. Community members detained and questioned her, stripping and tying her up, until police operatives, acting on a distress call, rescued her from potential lynching. She was taken to the Central Police Station in Abakaliki, where no accusers came forward with evidence. Further investigation by SP Joshua Ukandu’s team revealed that Mrs. Nwewu has experienced episodes of mental instability following a traumatic stillbirth, supported by medical reports she provided. Bank statements also showed her account balance stemmed from years of trading. With no proof linking her to any child abduction, the police cleared her name and urged the public to avoid jungle justice and allow law enforcement to follow due legal process.
