Ejiofor Calls for True Federalism as States Rely on Abuja for Salaries

IPOB lead counsel Ifeanyi Ejiofor has called for a return to genuine federalism, arguing that Nigerian states should have greater control over resources and be held accountable for their economic decisions. Reacting to President Bola Tinubu’s remark that some governors had approached the Presidency “cap in hand” for salary support, Ejiofor said the situation exposes a deeper weakness in Nigeria’s federal structure. He argued that states are recognised as governments but often remain dependent on Abuja for basic obligations such as paying workers and pensioners. He said Nigeria’s earlier regional system encouraged autonomy, fiscal responsibility and competition, while the current arrangement has concentrated excessive economic power at the centre. According to him, states need stronger fiscal autonomy, responsible resource management and greater accountability to their citizens rather than permanent dependence on federal allocations.
