Niger Police Confirm Abduction of Groundnut Farmers as Rescue Efforts Begin

Niger State Police Command and the chairman of Mariga Local Government Area have confirmed the abduction of farmers harvesting groundnuts around Tungan Rimi in the Ma’undu-Beri area. The local government chairman said 47 farmers were taken and that the gunmen demanded ₦2 million for each victim. He added that one abducted woman reportedly gave birth in captivity. Police gave a lower figure, saying no more than 20 people were abducted from Mukura village in Kasuwan-Garba District on September 27. Security operatives and local vigilantes have been deployed, while rescue efforts continue.
