Uganda’s King Oyo, Once the World’s Youngest Monarch, Dies at 34

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom has died at the age of 34. He became king in 1995 at just three years old following the death of his father. Guinness World Records recognised him as the world’s youngest reigning monarch. He ruled over more than two million people in western Uganda. Tooro Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki said the king died on Thursday, August 27, describing his passing as a major loss to the royal family and the kingdom. The cause of death was not disclosed, though local reports said he had been critically ill and receiving treatment in the United States. The kingdom said King Oyo is survived by a prince who will succeed him under Tooro’s hereditary royal tradition.
