US Transfers 18 Suspects to Face Charges Over Haiti President Moïse’s Assassination
United States authorities have transferred 18 suspects from Haiti to South Florida to face federal charges over the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. The suspects include Colombian nationals accused of taking part in the wider plot. Moïse was shot dead at his home near Port-au-Prince on July 7, 2021, while his wife, Martine Moïse, was injured. US prosecutors say parts of the alleged conspiracy were planned and financed through South Florida, involving money, weapons, personnel and logistical support. Authorities have indicted 30 people in the case so far. Four men were convicted in Miami in May 2026, while another defendant received a 20-year sentence in a related money-laundering case. The transfers have renewed concerns about Haiti’s ability to prosecute the assassination amid deep political instability and insecurity.
