ICPC Dismisses Officer Over Alleged Unauthorised Visit to El-Rufai in Custody

ICPC Dismisses Officer Over Alleged Unauthorised Visit to El-Rufai in Custody

The ICPC has reportedly dismissed a security officer accused of helping Aichatou Assabe El-Rufai, a wife of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, gain unauthorised access to him while he was in custody. The officer, Daniel Stephen, was said to have admitted before an internal panel that he drove her into the premises, used a back entrance and escorted her to the area where El-Rufai was being held. The visit reportedly lasted about 15 minutes, during which she handed him a document and discussed a court matter with him in Hausa. Stephen allegedly acknowledged that the visit bypassed established procedures requiring visitor registration and security clearance. He was also said to have described previous occasions in which he assisted other visitors to enter through the back entrance. El-Rufai has reportedly been in ICPC custody since February 19 over allegations of money laundering and conversion of public property, which he denies.
