NLC Hails FG’s 100% Gratuity Scheme for Retiring Civil Servants
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, NLC President Mr Joe Ajaero praised the Federal Government’s approval of a 100% gratuity scheme for retiring federal civil servants. The new exit benefit, effective January 1, 2026, grants workers with at least 10 years of service a lump-sum payment equal to their total annual emolument, on top of their Contributory Pension Scheme benefits. Ajaero described the move as a positive development. He said gratuity offers immediate financial support and recognises the loyalty and dedication of civil servants. He added that it helps retirees manage expenses while waiting for pension disbursements. The labour leader also urged the government to settle unpaid gratuities for past retirees, noting that no law ever abolished the benefit. He called on private sector employers to adopt similar schemes to foster a culture of fairness and gratitude across all industries.
