Iran Hangs Elite Student Over Alleged CIA and Mossad Spying
Iranian authorities have executed a 29-year-old postgraduate student accused of collaborating with the CIA and Mossad. Rights groups report that Erfan Shakourzadeh, a top-ranked aerospace engineering student, was held in solitary confinement, tortured and forced into false confessions before his execution. He is the fifth person put to death on espionage charges since the conflict began in early 2025. Dozens more have been executed over protests and alleged ties to banned opposition groups. Iran remains the world’s second-largest user of capital punishment after China. Rights monitors say at least 1,639 people were hanged in 2025 and 190 so far in 2026.
