Gumi Proposes Amnesty and Rehabilitation Plan for Bandits
Kaduna-based cleric Sheik Ahmad Gumi has urged the Federal Government to grant amnesty to armed bandits. He says the state should mirror the rehabilitation approach used for repentant Boko Haram members. Speaking at his Kaduna residence on May 25, Gumi argued that a military, or “kinetic,” strategy has failed for 17 years. He proposed engaging bandits directly, dislodging them from forest hideouts, supporting their families and enrolling their children in school. Gumi added that some bandits are ready to surrender if guaranteed protection from arrest or retaliation. He also denied any support for terrorism, stressing that he does not condone or advocate violence.
