Gombe: Man Allegedly Posed as Soldier to Collect Over ₦700,000 From Two Women
The Nigerian Army has arrested a 35-year-old man in Gombe for allegedly impersonating a military officer and collecting more than ₦700,000 from two women in Gombe and Bauchi. Army personnel reportedly acted after a businesswoman became suspicious of a promotion letter he showed her. She said checks with military contacts revealed that the number on the document did not match official records. She allegedly kept in contact with him and invited him to her office before soldiers arrested him. The suspect admitted falsely claiming to be an army officer and acknowledged receiving over ₦500,000 from the Gombe woman and about ₦210,000 from another woman in Bauchi. However, he denied deliberately using romance to defraud them, saying he intended to repay the money. The Army said it is investigating whether he had accomplices and will hand him over to the police after its preliminary inquiry.
