Why Abuja Workers Still Spend So Much on Daily Public Transport
A low-level government worker earning ₦140,000 and living in Mararaba may spend ₦2,500 to ₦3,000 to reach Utako each day. Over 20 workdays, a return journey can consume about ₦50,000 monthly. That leaves little room after food, rent and other essentials. A higher minimum wage means little when transport fares and the cost of living keep rising. As the capital city, Abuja should have affordable and reliable mass transit connecting its outskirts to major work areas. Residents should demand answers on why public transport has remained out of reach for many workers.
