Boma Dokubo on Leaving Engineering, Surviving Trauma and Returning to Pageantry at 30
Boma Dokubo, a Bayelsa-born creative strategist and former Miss Grand Nigeria contestant, shares why she left a corporate engineering career and returned to pageantry at 30 to compete for Miss Universe Nigeria. She recounts surviving a drugging incident, seeking psychiatric care and rebuilding her confidence through work, therapy, faith, journalling and long-distance running. She says healing has not been linear, but has taught her to set boundaries and choose a life that feels authentic. Boma also discusses building ALBA Studios, her creative strategy agency, and Alba Dawn, an initiative focused on education, rehabilitation and opportunities for people rebuilding their lives after trauma, addiction, domestic violence or incarceration. For her, returning to pageantry is not about proving herself to others. It is about refusing to believe that age, loss or difficult circumstances can prevent a new beginning.
