States Spend N512bn on Government Houses and Travel in Six Months
Available budget implementation reports show that 33 state governments recorded at least N512.10bn in spending on Government Houses, Governors’ Offices, executive administration, travel and transport between January and June 2026. The figure includes N420.01bn for Government House, Governor’s Office and related executive administration, plus N92.09bn for travel and transport. It is far higher than the combined six-month basic salaries of Nigeria’s 36 governors, estimated at N108.65m. Kogi recorded the highest identifiable executive-office expenditure at N65.34bn, followed by Ogun at N45.26bn and Lagos at N45.04bn. Plateau posted the highest identifiable travel and transport spending at N10.11bn. The data does not represent governors’ personal income. It covers the wider cost of running executive offices, including staff, protocol, security, residences, maintenance, utilities, official functions and government travel. The figures have renewed scrutiny over whether higher state revenues are translating into better public services and infrastructure.
