Nigeria Records Negative Global Perception Score in 2026 Survey

Nigeria received a net global perception score of -3 in the 2026 Democracy Perception Index, placing it among the countries that drew more negative views than positive ones. The survey drew responses from more than 46,000 people across 85 countries. Its net perception score is calculated by subtracting negative opinions of a country from positive opinions. Switzerland and Canada recorded the highest scores at +36, followed by Japan at +34 and Sweden at +33. Israel ranked lowest at -24, while Nigeria was listed alongside countries including India, Pakistan, Russia and Saudi Arabia with negative scores. A country’s international reputation can affect tourism, investment, diplomacy and cultural influence. The figures may prompt discussion about how Nigeria is represented abroad and what could improve its global image.
