Iran Has Not Shifted Its Position on US Despite Talks, Pezeshkian Says

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says Tehran’s core position toward the United States has not changed despite renewed diplomatic contacts between both countries. Speaking at a news conference, Pezeshkian said the talks do not amount to a compromise of Iran’s political identity or national interests. He argued that Washington’s willingness to negotiate showed it had been compelled to engage Iran through dialogue. He defended the recent memorandum between the two countries, saying it does not require Iran to abandon any key interests. Pezeshkian also accused the US of failing to fully follow agreed arrangements on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, including procedures expected to involve Oman. He said disputes should be resolved through the mechanisms in the agreement, while Iran continues negotiations without giving up its broader foreign-policy principles.

I agree. Talks can still help manage tensions, but without flexibility on core issues, progress may remain limited.

The statement suggests Iran wants talks without allowing them to be interpreted as a political climbdown.

Diplomatic contact itself can still matter, even when leaders publicly stress that their underlying positions have not shifted.

It is worth watching whether future statements describe concrete areas of agreement, rather than only repeating each side's established position.
