Fani-Kayode Rejects ‘Blue Silk’ Honour, Says Staff Accepted It Without His Approval
Nigeria’s high commissioner to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, has rejected the Senior Counsel of Nigeria designation, also known as Blue Silk. He said his staff accepted it at an event without his authorisation and described the incident as an administrative misjudgement. Fani-Kayode also questioned whether the designation complies with the laws and court rulings governing the legal profession. He said he does not endorse or accept the title. The Nigerian Law Society recently named Fani-Kayode, Seyi Tinubu and three other lawyers as recipients at its annual conference. The designation has drawn criticism from the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee, which says Senior Advocate of Nigeria is the only legally recognised professional rank. The Nigerian Law Society and the Body of Senior Counsel of Nigeria maintain that they can award the designation under their own rules.
