Akpabio Denies Insulting Islam, Says He Sponsored 5,800 Muslim Pilgrims
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has denied making disparaging remarks about Islam during the Senate’s debate on the Suicide Prevention Bill 2026. Akpabio said his reference to extremists expecting rewards in the afterlife was taken out of context. He maintained that Islam forbids suicide and the killing of others, adding that terrorism should not be linked to any religion. He said he has supported Muslim pilgrimages to Mecca for 25 years, including sponsoring 5,800 Muslims during his time as Akwa Ibom governor. He also said he sponsored more than 10,000 Christians on pilgrimages to Rome and Jerusalem. Akpabio urged Nigerians to judge Senate debates by their final legislative decisions rather than isolated remarks made during deliberations.
