Why Many Japanese Companies in Nigeria Remain Unknown to Consumers
The Federal Government recently said that 57 Japanese companies operate in Nigeria, yet many Nigerians may struggle to name even three. This raises a key question for foreign technology firms: being present in Nigeria is not the same as being known, understood or trusted. Japanese investors have supported Nigerian businesses through ventures such as Mobility 54’s investment in Autochek and Health54’s backing of Lifestores Healthcare. However, these investments and partnerships rarely become part of wider public conversations. For foreign companies, credibility must come before a major product launch. Local hiring, partnerships with universities and tech hubs, reliable after-sales support, authorised service centres and engagement with Nigerian institutions can help build trust. I think the real challenge is not simply entering Nigeria, but becoming visible and credible enough for Nigerians to choose the brand. Why do you think so many foreign companies operate in Nigeria without becoming familiar to the average consumer?
