Why Anioma’s Igbo Identity Deserves Historical Context

I believe the Anioma identity should be discussed with more history and less assumption. Although Anioma communities are in Delta State and west of the Niger, geography alone does not settle questions of ethnicity. Many Anioma communities speak Igbo varieties and share historical, cultural and family ties with communities across the Niger. In my view, this supports recognising Anioma as a distinct regional identity within the broader Igbo cultural and linguistic family. Being Anioma and being Igbo need not conflict. Just as Yoruba communities have distinct dialects and local histories, Anioma can retain its uniqueness while maintaining its wider historical connections. Similarities with neighbouring groups should not be used to erase Anioma’s own identity or reduce a complex history to modern state boundaries.
