ECOWAS Parliament Urges Action as Climate Change Drives Displacement and Insecurity

The ECOWAS Parliament has called for practical, people-centred action against climate change, warning that environmental degradation is worsening displacement, livelihood losses and insecurity across West Africa. At the Parliament’s second extraordinary session seminar in Accra, Speaker Mémounatou Ibrahima said climate disruption is already visible in reduced farm yields, retreating coastlines, flooded communities and families forced to relocate. Lawmakers, experts and other stakeholders are expected to examine how climate and environmental pressures drive population movements and insecurity, and to propose coordinated regional responses.
