Nigerian Man Convicted of Murder After Leicester Street Attack
A 24-year-old Nigerian, Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu, has been found guilty of murdering 56-year-old Nila Patel in Leicester. After crashing his car under the influence of cannabis, he randomly attacked Ms. Patel as she walked home from a bus stop. Security staff from Leicester Royal Infirmary restrained him until police arrived. Earlier that day, Ahanonu drove erratically across the city centre, swerving through lanes and traffic lights before colliding with a kerb outside a bus stop. Police later discovered dealer bags of cannabis worth over £3,000 and seized several phones from his rucksack. At Leicester Crown Court on 23 March 2026, he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, drug possession with intent to supply, and assaulting an emergency worker. He was acquitted of a separate common assault charge. A jury returned a guilty verdict on the murder count, and he remains in custody awaiting sentencing.
