Kenya Orders Foreigners Out of Hawking and Small Retail Businesses From Monday
Kenyan President William Ruto has ordered a crackdown on foreigners operating small shops and street-hawking businesses, saying such trades should be reserved for Kenyans. The directive is expected to take effect on Monday, 7 September. Ruto announced the move while meeting small and medium-scale traders at State House. He said Kenya wants foreign investment in major ventures, not foreigners competing with local kiosk owners, hawkers and informal retailers. Trade Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui has been directed to begin the enforcement exercise. A Local Content Bill before Parliament is also expected to define businesses that should be reserved for Kenyan citizens. However, key details remain unclear, including the businesses covered, enforcement agencies, and whether East African Community citizens will receive different treatment.
