Nigeria’s Insecurity Economy: Who Benefits as Security Spending Soars?

Nigeria spends hundreds of billions of naira on defence, security votes, military equipment, surveillance and emergency interventions each year. Yet terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, communal violence and armed robbery continue to threaten communities nationwide. This has raised difficult questions about accountability. Security spending is necessary, but citizens deserve to know whether the funds are producing results. Limited disclosure around security votes and major procurement contracts has also deepened concerns about waste, inflated contracts and weak oversight. Insecurity has created demand for private guards, CCTV systems, armoured vehicles, insurance, risk consultants and community vigilante arrangements. These services can be legitimate and necessary, but they show the heavy financial burden created by a crisis that also enriches kidnappers through ransom payments. Nigeria’s security challenges have deep roots, including poverty, unemployment, weak institutions, illegal arms trafficking and poor intelligence. Lasting progress will require transparent spending, stronger oversight, judicial reform and greater trust between citizens and security agencies.
