Operatives of the FCT Police Command arrested six suspects linked to a notorious kidnap and ‘one chance’ syndicate after a distress call on June 29. A young woman abducted in Maitama was released on July 3 following payment of a ₦8.25 million ransom. Digital tracking traced the victim to Kwan-kwashe Village in Niger State. Surveillance by the Violent Crime Response Unit led to the suspects’ arrest on July 5 in Suleja. The accused include ringleader Ifeoma Nnamchi (35) and five others, two of whom are her children, aged 14 and 17. Police recovered the ransom cash, two Toyota vehicles, jewellery, mobile phones, a laptop and a cutlass. Preliminary checks show Nnamchi and one accomplice had been arrested previously for similar offences. Investigators say the gang operated across Kubwa Expressway, Maitama Federal Housing Road and other FCT locations since 2024, extorting over ₦12.8 million from multiple victims. Further charges are pending.

What measures do you think the FCT Police should take to prevent future kidnappings by such syndicates?

You're right, better community policing and tighter checkpoints will help catch these criminals before they strike again.

Recovering the ₦8.25m ransom sounds good, yet I wonder if the key organizers are still at large and free to strike again.

We praise arrests now, but shouldn't we question why it took a distress call before digital tracking was used?

Community alert networks and regular neighbourhood watch updates could help police respond faster and deter kidnappers.
