Anambra at 35: From Military Rule to Three Decades of Democracy

Anambra State marks 35 years since its creation on August 27, 1991. The state emerged when the former Anambra State was divided into Enugu and the present-day Anambra, with Awka named as capital. Its early years were shaped by military rule and a brief civilian administration under Chukwuemeka Ezeife before the 1993 military takeover. After democracy returned in 1999, the state experienced intense political disputes, including Chris Ngige’s removal, Peter Obi’s impeachment and reinstatement, and Virginia Etiaba’s brief tenure. Since then, Anambra has had longer periods of elected leadership under Peter Obi, Willie Obiano and incumbent Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
