21 Global Banks Plan Dollar Stablecoin: What It Could Mean for Nigerian Payments
Twenty-one financial institutions plan to form a company that could launch a regulated U.S. dollar stablecoin in the first half of 2027. The group includes Bank of America, Citi, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, Deutsche Bank, UBS and Santander, with Standard Bank representing Africa. The proposed stablecoin could support cross-border payments. Nigerians may eventually be able to send naira abroad while a fintech provider handles compliance and foreign exchange, uses the stablecoin for settlement, and delivers local currency to the recipient. If adopted, the system could affect remittances, imports, exports, business-to-business transfers and payments to foreign suppliers. It remains a proposal, but the involvement of major banks signals growing institutional interest in stablecoin-based payment infrastructure.
