El-Rufai Alleges ICPC Conditioned His Release on Quitting Politics
Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) of pressuring him to stop all political activities as a condition for his release from detention. In a 30-page criminal complaint filed in court, El-Rufai alleges that ICPC officers, acting on the chairman’s orders, told him that continued participation in politics would prolong his detention. He claims they demanded he withdraw from politics to regain his freedom. The affidavit supporting the complaint details that the officials warned him repeatedly. Paragraphs 22 to 24 state that only a promise to quit politics would secure his release. El-Rufai argues this demand is an abuse of office and violates his constitutional rights. He is asking the court to examine the conduct of the ICPC officials under Sections 264 and 267 of the Penal Code. The ICPC has not yet responded publicly to the allegations.
