Tinubu Calls for Two Permanent African Seats on UN Security Council

President Bola Tinubu has called for major United Nations reforms, beginning with permanent representation for Africa on the UN Security Council. Vice President Kashim Shettima delivered the address on his behalf at the UN General Assembly. Nigeria wants Africa to have at least two permanent seats, with full voting rights and veto powers while the veto remains in place. Tinubu said Africa should no longer remain outside the council’s permanent membership while many of its conflicts dominate the agenda. He also urged world leaders to prioritise diplomacy, collective security and climate action. The President said Nigeria would continue supporting peace efforts through ECOWAS, the African Union and regional partnerships, while pursuing energy access, digital growth and a fair global financial system.
