Family Seeks Fresh Police Probe Into Missing Corpse at Anambra Teaching Hospital
The family of late engineer Chukwunweike Okammelu has asked the Inspector-General of Police to order a supplementary investigation into the alleged disappearance of his body from the mortuary of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka. The family’s lawyer said the corpse went missing earlier this year and that an initial police investigation found possible criminal conspiracy and systemic failures. However, the report reportedly recommended prosecuting only the mortician. The family argues that the investigation left major questions unanswered, including the chain of custody of the body, the roles of other suspects, the hospital’s responsibility and the circumstances surrounding the alleged unlawful release of the corpse. They have asked the police to review the case thoroughly and ensure that everyone found responsible is held accountable.
