Retiring Supreme Court Justice Urges CJN to Stop Politicians’ Gifts to Judges
Retiring Supreme Court Justice Ibrahim Saulawa has urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria to stop politicians from sending gifts such as cows, rams and vehicles to judicial officers. He said such gestures can compromise, or appear to compromise, the integrity of the courts. Saulawa said he once rejected a new vehicle offered by an influential person before delivering judgment in a case. According to him, efforts were later made through prominent intermediaries to persuade him to accept the gift, but he refused. At his valedictory court session, the Justice urged judges to uphold integrity and avoid social situations that could create doubts about their independence. He also recalled his role during the legal disputes surrounding the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, saying the judiciary resisted attempts to manipulate court processes through conflicting orders.
