China Condemns US Blacklist of Alibaba, Baidu, Tencent and Other Firms
China’s Foreign Ministry has denounced the United States’ decision to blacklist several major Chinese companies it accuses of supporting the military. Spokesman Lin Jian urged Washington to reverse what he called unfair and erroneous practices. The US Department of Defense recently added Alibaba, Baidu, Tencent, memory chipmakers ChangXin and Yangtze, pharmaceutical firm WuXi AppTec and robotics start-up Unitree to its Chinese military company list. This update largely mirrors a version briefly released in February. Beijing insists the blacklist generalises national security to suppress Chinese businesses. Both Alibaba and Baidu have rejected their designations as baseless and warned they may pursue legal action to have their names removed.
