Wike Accuses Cardinal Onaiyekan of Taking Sides in 2023 Election

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has challenged Cardinal John Onaiyekan’s neutrality, alleging that the cleric took a political side during the 2023 general election. Wike spoke after Onaiyekan reportedly said that people around President Bola Tinubu were giving him an overly positive assessment of the country and that the President appeared focused on the 2027 election. The minister said religious leaders should criticise government where necessary but also acknowledge progress. He argued that repeated criticism without recognition of achievements could be seen as politically motivated. The comments have renewed debate over whether religious leaders should openly comment on politics and government performance.
