NASA’s Curiosity Rover Captures a Stunning Morning-to-Evening View of Mars
NASA has released a new panoramic “postcard” from Mars, created from images taken by the Curiosity rover at different times of day near a sandy feature called Chocolatal. The panorama combines morning and evening photographs taken several days apart. Blue tones represent the morning scene, while yellow tones show the later-day view. The colours are an artistic interpretation rather than Mars’ natural appearance. Curiosity captured the images while exploring the lower slopes of Mount Sharp inside Gale Crater. The panorama coincided with the rover’s 5,000th Martian day, or sol. A day on Mars lasts about 39 minutes longer than a day on Earth. The car-sized rover has explored Mars since 2012, studying whether the planet once had conditions that could have supported microbial life.
