Envisioning a Shared State for Palestinians and Israelis
Some Palestinians still advocate a one-state solution “from the river to the sea.” They believe a single state is theirs by right. Yet identity and nation-building in such a state would be daunting. A practical upgrade could mirror an EU-style partnership. Jews would administer areas where they are the majority, and Palestinians those where they live. All citizens would move freely across zones without visas. To gain momentum, Palestinians should seek UN backing by highlighting their unique twentieth-century dispossession. A temporary, US-led peacekeeping force could maintain order during the transition. Over time, Palestine could emerge as a sovereign nation. Regional dynamics matter. Decisions by Israel or Iran will ripple into Palestine. As the Yoruba proverb warns, “Whatever misfortune befalls Iwo soon reaches Ede.”
