Zamfara Governor: I Refused N300m Ransom, Told Kidnappers to Kill My Brothers
Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal revealed he turned down a ₦300 million ransom demand after kidnappers abducted his brothers in 2019. He insisted he would not negotiate or pay, saying it would only encourage more crimes. Speaking at a town hall in Abuja, he recounted how his brothers were released after three months despite the refusal to meet the kidnappers’ demands. Lawal argues that paying ransoms only emboldens criminal gangs and fuels further abductions. He also used the platform to renew his call for the establishment of state police as part of a broader strategy to tackle Nigeria’s insecurity challenges. The governor stressed that his policy of non-negotiation with criminals remains unchanged.
