Report: Israeli President Tasks Netanyahu Rival Eisenkot With Forming Government
Israel’s President Isaac Herzog has reportedly asked Gadi Eisenkot to try to form the next government, after more lawmakers recommended him than Benjamin Netanyahu. Eisenkot now has 28 days, with a possible extension, to build a coalition with enough support in the Knesset. Arab-led parties have backed his nomination, though he has said he does not want to govern with them. If he cannot form a government, another candidate may be nominated or a new election called. The report says Netanyahu warned that a government relying on Arab-led parties would weaken Israel. Arab politician Ahmad Tibi rejected Netanyahu’s accusations and said his priority was ending Netanyahu’s government. I welcome the political shift, believe Netanyahu should be investigated and jailed, and oppose injustice and what I consider genocide.
