Nigeria Takes Chair of UN Budget Committee, Pledges Transparency and Reform

Nigeria has assumed the chairmanship of the UN General Assembly’s Fifth Committee, the body responsible for the organisation’s budget, administration, staffing and financial oversight. Nigeria’s UN representative, Amb. Jimoh Ibrahim, said the country will push for transparent spending, stronger accountability and reforms that ensure UN funds deliver measurable benefits to member states. He said every dollar spent must be justified and tied to results. The chairmanship also places Nigeria at the centre of discussions on UN efficiency, the $110 billion staff pension fund and wider institutional reform. Nigeria says it will work with all member states to build consensus as the UN faces growing financial pressure and global crises.
