More Than 300 Killed as Yemen Fighting Intensifies Between Houthis and Government Forces
Renewed fighting across Yemen has killed more than 300 people and displaced nearly 20,000, according to reports from the conflict zones and the International Organization for Migration. Houthi forces reportedly launched an offensive aimed at disrupting the route between Mokha and Taiz, while also targeting Saudi shipping and oil facilities. Saudi-aligned government forces responded with counterattacks along the coast and near the Saudi border, saying they are pushing towards Hodeidah, a key Houthi-controlled port. Government forces claim advances in parts of the north and south, including the capture of military positions and reported Houthi surrenders. However, intense fighting continues and neither side has taken a major population centre. The escalation could further threaten the Bab el-Mandeb shipping route and deepen the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.
