Ekiti Woman Sentenced to 14 Years for Stealing Newborn, Declared Fugitive
An Ekiti State High Court has sentenced a 37-year-old woman to 14 years’ imprisonment for stealing a newborn. The sentence will take effect when she is arrested, as she was tried in absentia after jumping bail. The court heard that she allegedly faked a pregnancy after losing one in 2025, reportedly to prevent her abroad-based husband from learning the truth. Prosecutors said she later took a baby from a hospital in Ado-Ekiti and handed the child to a midwife for care. The midwife reportedly noticed inconsistencies and alerted the police, leading to the woman’s arrest. She was later granted bail but stopped appearing in court. The judge revoked her bail, declared her a fugitive and ordered security agencies to apprehend her. Her two sureties, including her father, were each sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for failing to produce her in court and pay the required recognisance fees.
