Florida Couple Survive Lightning Strike After Bystanders Perform CPR

A Florida couple survived after lightning struck their umbrella while they were walking hand in hand on the West Orange Trail in Winter Garden on September 2. Clare Walenga became unconscious and stopped breathing after the strike. Nearby runners called emergency services, while one bystander began CPR despite having no previous experience performing it. She took a breath shortly before mouth-to-mouth resuscitation was needed. Her husband, Aaron, was also injured and unable to move because of severe pain. Both were taken to hospital, where Clare was treated for a concussion and Aaron received treatment for facial bruising. The couple credited the bystanders’ fast response for saving Clare’s life. Their family says they are recovering, while a fundraiser has raised support for their medical needs.
