Supreme Court Ruling Renews Calls for Release of Osun LG Funds
The Federal Government has been urged to release statutory allocations withheld from Osun State’s 30 local governments following the February 2025 council elections. FAAC data reportedly puts the outstanding allocations at more than ₦250 billion. The funds are needed for primary-school teachers, health workers, council employees, traditional councils, retirees and local infrastructure. In its judgment, the Supreme Court reportedly held that withholding the funds breached the 1999 Constitution and said the allocations should go directly to local government accounts. However, the suit was dismissed because the Osun State Government filed it on behalf of the councils. The renewed call follows Governor Ademola Adeleke’s reported electoral victory, with critics arguing that continued withholding of the funds would hurt residents and local services.
