The Baroque era of music ran from about 1600 to 1750. It developed alongside the Baroque artistic movement in Europe and began with the emergence of the earliest operas. Polyphonic music, in which several independent melodies are played or sung together, remained important. Composers wrote for small instrumental ensembles, choirs and keyboard instruments such as the organ, harpsichord and clavichord. The period produced enduring forms including the fugue, invention, sonata and concerto. Its best-known composers include J. S. Bach, George Frideric Handel, Georg Philipp Telemann and Antonio Vivaldi.
