Russia’s Jet-Powered Drones Challenge Ukraine’s Air Defences

Ukraine is facing a growing challenge as Russia expands its use of jet-powered attack drones. Ukrainian military data cited by international media indicate that launches rose from about 450 in June to roughly 2,850 in August. The drones can fly at speeds of 240 to 500 km/h, making them harder for many existing Ukrainian interceptor drones to catch. Ukraine’s earlier systems were largely built to counter slower Shahed-type drones and had achieved high interception rates. Ukraine is now developing faster interceptor drones, AI-assisted targeting and lower-cost guided missiles. More than 60 Ukrainian companies are reportedly involved, while aircraft may still be needed to stop some attacks amid concerns over air-to-air missile supplies.
