Abdul El-Sayed Takes Aim at Trump and Vance After Historic Michigan Senate Win
Abdul El-Sayed, a doctor and progressive Democrat, has won Michigan’s closely watched U.S. Senate race, becoming the first Muslim elected to the Senate. In his victory speech, he mocked President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who had criticised him during the campaign. Addressing Vance, El-Sayed joked that he would be constitutionally required to swear him in when the Senate convenes. He also quipped that Trump, who had struggled to pronounce his name, could simply call him “senator.” El-Sayed also criticised political action committees and special-interest groups, including AIPAC, over campaign spending. He said his campaign had overcome major financial disadvantages and ended his speech by declaring, “Michigan, we beat a machine.”
