Tracing Possible Igbo-Nri Artefacts in Brazil and South America

I am sharing preliminary research on possible Igbo-Nri cultural links in South America, especially Brazil. Afro-Brazilian museums and archives may hold objects and records connected to enslaved Igbo people and their descendants. My research focuses on motifs associated with Igbo-Ukwu and Nri, including spiral designs and metalworking traditions. These proposed connections require careful museum documentation, archaeological evidence and independent expert verification. I have planned a research visit to Museu Afro Brasil in São Paulo on 6 September 2026 to examine relevant collections, subject to the museum’s access rules. I will share photographs and documented findings where permission is granted. Igbo-Ukwu’s ninth-century bronzes remain an important part of Nigerian history. The discovery demonstrates sophisticated local artistry, trade networks and lost-wax casting traditions long before the colonial era.
