Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway: Questions Over Route Changes, Cost and Transparency
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is projected to run from Lagos to Calabar and connect key coastal states, ports and communities. Supporters say it could improve trade, tourism and jobs. However, I believe the project now needs clearer public accountability before further major decisions are made. I am concerned by reported questions over the project’s cost, funding, procurement process, environmental assessment and compensation for affected communities and businesses. The government should publish the relevant approvals, bidding records, cost breakdowns, funding arrangements and environmental documents so Nigerians can assess the project properly. Any proposed route change must be openly explained and subjected to consultation with affected states, lawmakers and coastal communities. A project of this scale should unite the region, protect livelihoods and follow due process, rather than create fresh doubts about who benefits and who may be left out.
