Documents Detail Alleged Plan to Recruit Repentant Boko Haram Fighters for Coup Plot

Documents Detail Alleged Plan to Recruit Repentant Boko Haram Fighters for Coup Plot — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Court documents linked to an alleged 2025 coup plot against President Bola Tinubu indicate that some accused senior military officers planned to recruit repentant Boko Haram fighters and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force to support the operation. The documents reportedly include officers’ and civilians’ statements, bank records, encrypted chats, purchase receipts and details of hotels allegedly used for secret meetings. The plot was first uncovered after 16 serving officers were arrested in September 2025, with about 40 suspects later taken into custody. The serving officers are facing a General Court-Martial, while civilian and retired military suspects are being prosecuted at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The admissibility of some statements remains disputed, and the court has ordered a trial-within-trial to determine whether they were made voluntarily.

What safeguards should exist before allegations this serious involving military officers and former insurgents are treated as settled fact?

I agree. Claims this grave deserve independent verification, due process, and careful reporting before anyone treats them as established.

The alleged plan shows why reintegration of repentant fighters remains a sensitive issue, especially when security and public trust are involved.

Court documents may outline allegations, but they should not be mistaken for proof until the accused have had a fair chance to respond.

Authorities should communicate clearly about the legal process, protect witnesses where necessary, and avoid statements that could inflame public fear.
