Soyinka Urges PCC to Tackle Government Defiance of Court Orders
Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has urged the Public Complaints Commission to address the persistent failure of government agencies to obey court judgments. He said many citizens wait for years to enjoy the benefit of rulings secured after long legal battles. Speaking at the inaugural Nigerian Ombudsman Annual Conference in Abuja, Soyinka said delayed enforcement can deny victims justice completely. He cited cases involving court orders, including directives for the return of confiscated passports, and said compliance must become a priority. The PCC said it received 1,281,984 complaints in the past two years and resolved 716,688. Speakers at the conference called for stronger institutions, improved monitoring and consequences for public officials who disregard judicial decisions.
