Reclaiming South Africa’s Promise: Will Soweto Rise Again?
I spent a week in Pretoria on public finance and reform. I felt both intellectual excitement and deep concern. Africans are increasingly told to “go back to their countries,” which is not the South Africa I once knew. Eighteen years ago, I studied at Stellenbosch University in Cape Town and saw openness and promise. Today, leadership gaps, inequality, and migration pressures have strained the social fabric. But decline is not destiny. We must elect accountable, visionary leaders. We need resilient economies, skills training, and real opportunities for youth. Soweto, Johannesburg, and Cape Town can honor Mandela’s vision of unity and inclusion. Returning to Nigeria, I recall Africa’s solidarity against apartheid. That shared sacrifice can lead to renewed purpose—or quiet regret. Africa must choose wisely.
