Journalist Alleges Police Harassment at Akwa Ibom Government House

A LEADERSHIP newspaper correspondent, Iniobong Ekponta, has alleged that police officers at the Akwa Ibom Government House gate in Uyo harassed and shoved him while he was trying to deliver a letter to the governor’s Chief Press Secretary. Ekponta said a female officer called him back after he had entered the premises and questioned why he was there. He alleged that she threatened detention and raised an alarm that drew other officers, who then ordered him away. The journalist has asked Governor Umo Eno to investigate the incident and ensure security personnel treat visitors and journalists professionally. He also urged the Akwa Ibom NUJ to engage the authorities on clear access procedures for accredited journalists and other legitimate visitors.
